County Executive Leggett has proposed a FY2010 budget that does not include negotiated COLA's or provisions of a tentative agreement reached months ago to amend the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. This tentative agreement would have saved Montgomery County approximately $7 million dollars. The Fire and Rescue Collective Bargaining Law states "The annual operating budget which the employer submits to the County Council must include sufficient funds to pay for the items in the parties' final agreement".

The Montgomery County Career Fire Fighters Association represents over 950 fire fighter/paramedics employed by the Montgomery County Government. Our organization is the exclusive bargaining agent for uniformed personnel at the rank of Fire Fighter/Rescuer I through Fire/Rescue Captain. Additionally, many non-bargaining unit personnel are members of Local 1664. Our members staff all of Montgomery County's 34 Fire and Rescue Stations as fire fighter/paramedics of the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service. The Department employs over 1000 uniformed fire fighters and paramedics operating in fire stations, performing fire investigations, bomb squad, fire code enforcement, radio communications and training.

Montgomery County, Maryland is bordered by Washington, D.C. to the south, Prince George's County, Md. to the east, Frederick, Carroll and Howard Counties, Md. to the north and Fairfax and Loudon Counties, Va. to the west. Density ranges from high-rise business districts in the south end of the county to rolling farmland in the northern part of the county.
